Brigada Eskwela - core of Filipino Bayanihan spirit

In preparation of the start of the next school year, the public schools with the consent and guidance of the Department of Education (DepED) initiate a nationwide campaign for the voluntary convergence of resources, efforts of teachers, parents, students, community officials and non-government organizations. They call it, “Brigada Eskwela,” which means “Bayanihan para sa Paaralan.”

It is an annual campaign wherein all voluntary stakeholders jointly conduct minor repair and clean ups on their respective schools for at least two weeks before the start of the coming school year.

As an example, the Mexico National High School where I serve as school administrator, we are doing minor maintenance work such as the repairing of leaking water pipes, ceiling boards, broken windows and furnitures and the repainting of the roof and exterior walls. We are doing this together with barangay officials and parent-community volunteers,

This “Bayanihan sa Paaralan” encourages volunteers give out their time, effort, and even donate materials such as paint, cement, lumber and other materials, which could be used for minor repairs and building.

The Brigada Eskwela is being successfully accomplished through the help of donations in kind from benevolent individuals, government and non-government organizations.

As principal, as early as February, I encouraged the Parent-Teacher Community Assocation (PTCA) to organize the Brigada Eskwela through the recruitment of parent volunteers and I have already approached local officials and businesses for whatever donations they could provide for the said activity.

But I believe, beyond the material and financial benefits generated from Brigada Eskwela, the school is also gaining benefit from the goodwill generated when volunteer stakeholders exert for the common good.

I can proudly say that Brigada Eskwela, an experiential learning activity teaches the students the importance of community and of humanity, which forms the center of the Filipino-Kapampangan Spirit.

The Brigada Eskwela is now the present-day description of our well-known Bayanihan spirit – the long time tradition of volunteerism we Filipino-Kapampangans value most.(ROLANDO F. ZAPATA)
